2020 World Hockey Championship in Irkutsk

The next world championship in hockey 2020 will be held in Russia. All championship matches will be played in Irkutsk. For Russia, this will be the sixteenth home tournament. According to this index, the country is a leader, ignoring Sweden, where 14 competitions are held.

As to where and when the 2020 World Hockey Championship will be held, FIB decided at a meeting in 2019. The host city is Irkutsk.

The city still claims the championship in 2019. But ever since the construction of the indoor stadium didn’t start later, the World Championship has been held in Sweden Wenersborg.

By 2020, a new arena will appear in Irkutsk – the center of Baikal ice hockey and speed skating. A modern multipurpose sports facility is located near Academgorodok. The main battles of tournament A will take place here. Only one or two matches can take place at Stroitel Stadium in Shelekhov. According to the schedule, matches of tournament A are scheduled between March 28 and April 5, 2020.

Competition format

To make the games more spectacular, FIB has divided the participating teams into two groups: A and B. The strongest teams participating in the tournament A. Since the 2014 World Cup, Group A has eight teams. It is one of the groups where the world title is being played.

As a result of recent years, the main struggle will take place between the Russians, the Finns, and the Swedes. Those are the three teams that have stood on the podium for the past four years. Hockey players from Kazakhstan can wedge themselves into battle.

They have reached the semi-finals in a few years. A spot in the final is not guaranteed to anyone. We hope that the Russian team will be there and celebrate the victory.

The tournament among the B group teams is the struggle for the right to switch to the strongest group. The best team from League B will play in the main tournament at the next World Cup instead of the outsiders of League A. In 2020, it will be the Estonian team that won the B tournament in 2019.
